I am in favor of tree's not being people, as they do not express emotion
in a surprise 2nd vote, I believe people in comatose are "potatoes" not "people"

Well, they do say 'vegetative' state.... ...But animals express emotions, and they aren't classed as 'people'...what differentiates us, is the next question, if you want to win this debate =P

most animals can just as easily leave their child behind to save their own skins, humans have a conscience, so they also have guilt! something animals lack =P

A man/woman suffering from Psychopathy lacks both guilt and conscience...to suggest that more sentient animals such as Chimpanzees don't have either conscience or feelings of guilt, is wading into troubled waters =P And many more sentient animals will often die to protect offspring, because their maternal/paternal instincts still mirror ours....*the arugment continues* - =P
...How would a debate forum work on Nintendopeeps, I wonder....

you have an answer for everything huh? XD
I have the ultimate agruement!
Humans are animals with NO fur. do not try to say fish, we are vertebrates do not say whales, we have to live above water and do not say tree's first, and foremost, because we cannot perform photosynthesis
Counter THAT anne smartie pants bonney

| 272,
Okaaayyyyy *rubs hands, because she has all the empty time in the world to play around with*
Firstly, technically your hair is fur. It's the same thing, just under a different name =) Mole rats don't have fur! Nor do reptiles, for that matter. Or amphibians. So fur does not differentiate us from other vertebrates =)))
And humans have now started to develop scientific techniques that represent photosynthesis, for example in the Science museum in Tokyo =D
Here, let me start an argument on your side, which i'll then piece apart myself ^___^ Animals, unlike humans, it is theorised, are different from us because they cannot create contracts. A contract can be as simple as "You don't kill me, and I won't kill you". Make almost any large animal hungry enough, and there's no guarantee that it would stay true to that sort of contract. The reasons humans have managed to build such large societies, with so many people, is because they can hold true to these contracts. Another feature of a contract is the ability to punish someone if they break this contract.
But there are exceptions to this rule. Guide dogs will remain true to their contract to act as the eyes and ears of their owners. And more deeply still, it can be argued that Nature, as a whole, holds a contract with us. The argument follows that we have a contract to look after the Earth and not exploit our natural resources. How is this a contract? Because when we ignore our responsibilities, evidence seems to suggest right now that Nature will retaliate to the breaking of the contract with consequences such as global warming, climate change, whatever you want to call it. It appears that we have this contract with Nature.
You were close with that argument about animals not protecting their offspring too, but a little way off, because that is an instinctive impulse. You could argue that animals don't act contrary to their instincts, while people do. This one is a lot harder to disprove. But the more sentience (independent) you find in animals, such as in dolphins, dogs, and apes, the more likelihood that an animal will do just that. Again, we are not always separate from animals in that respect.
Language wa sometimes termed as the great difference between humans and other animals. But now scientists are discovering a great complexity of language with many animals, from pods of dolphins, with their whistles and squeaks, to ants, that react to each other's vibrations, which is a sensory language in its own right. Clare the poet once quoted, "Surely they speak a language whisperingly, too fine for us to hear" - and now that's been pretty much proven.
On a less deep point, I believe humans are the only mammals that can bring their forefinger and thumb together without external help. Funny, if that was the only things that made humans and animals different. But there's plenty reason to talk about the 'Homo Sapien' as an individual species really ;D
